- Reel 20, Track 4, Lesson 1
Synopsis
- AY 297 explores balance while standing on one leg and in half-kneeling positions, developing controlled hip joint movement while varying head positions. The lesson systematically challenges equilibrium through multiple balance variations while maintaining attention to breathing organization and spinal alignment.
Lesson Outline
- Section 1: Standing on right leg, explore hip joint movement forward, backward, right and left around heel while maintaining balance. Pay attention to breathing, head, eyes, jaw, tongue, and toes not gripping floor.
- Section 2: Lying supine, organize breathing for easy airflow without intentional movement in chest or stomach. Notice breathing patterns during rolling and coming to standing.
- Section 3: In half-kneeling with left foot forward and right hand on the floor by knee, lift left leg in arc backward and forward while head moves in opposite direction. Variations include extending left arm over head and alternating gaze between hand and foot.
- Sections 4: Half-kneeling on right knee with right hand on floor, bring left knee toward forehead while head moves toward knee. Explore touching forehead to knee with equal movement from both parts.
- Section 5: In half-kneeling right, take head and shoulder backward with hanging arm until left knee lifts. Make circles with hip joint while maintaining chin to throat connection.
- Section 6: Half-kneeling right with toes extended, alternate between bending head to knee and extending arm and left leg back while balancing.
- Sections 7-8: Half-kneeling right with left leg straight to side, explore lowering head to right shoulder while lifting left leg, then turning stomach toward ceiling.
- Sections 9-10: Standing on right leg, practice lowering to floor and lifting while maintaining balance. Explore heel-toe weight shifts and balance variations.
- Section 11: Standing on right leg with hands on head and knee, bend head sideways while lifting left heel backward.
Focus of the teaching
- Focus of Moshe’s Teaching: Moshe emphasizes the relationship between breathing and balance, stating “If you contract the arms, it is a sign that the breath is being held, and then the head does not work because it is held.” He highlights how disturbed breathing patterns occur when students don’t know how to organize the ribs with the diaphragm in unusual positions.
