Synopsis
- AY 201 is a breathing lesson that develops detailed awareness of the respiratory system by guiding conscious attention through the complete pathway of breath, from nostrils to lungs, while exploring different positions and head orientations.
Lesson Outline
- Sections 1-2: In supine with feet standing and eyes closed, begin with small chest and abdomen movements during breathing. Progress to following the air path from nostrils through bronchi to the right shoulder area, noticing how the chest pulls and expands the lung.
- Sections 3-5: Continue following the complete air pathway through nostrils, palate, trachea to bronchi, then specifically to the right lung. Pay attention to the air movement around the liver area and ribs, feeling the lung lengthening between pelvis and armpit.
- Sections 6-8: Explore the three-dimensional expansion of the right lung – lengthening, widening, and thickening. Then observe the complete cycle of lung retraction during exhalation, following the air’s retreat from shoulder, chest, and diaphragm back through the respiratory pathway.
- Sections 10-12: Sit cross-legged with head lowered, fingers interlaced behind head, and elbows hanging down. Maintain this position while exploring the same breathing awareness on the right side, then left side, then both, particularly focusing on lung lengthening.
- Sections 13-14: Move to side-sitting right to the right. Use right hand to tilt head toward right shoulder while exploring lung lengthening on both sides.
Focus of the teaching
- The lesson emphasizes making the automatic process of breathing more conscious and aware. Moshe points out that “ninety percent of the people shut the trachea down while breathing and interfere with the breath.” He explains that physical inflexibility is connected to breathing restrictions – “If someone does not know how to bend, the lung inside also does not know how to slide.”
