- Reel 33, Track 1, Lesson 5
- Duration: 26 minutes
Synopsis
- In the beginning of this lesson you are prone and are asked to use your arms to “pull”. You repeat movement on your back – precisely elbow in direction of knee. Moshe then reminds you of previous lesson where you crawled; right elbow to right knee on belly and vice versa He has you repeat the same actions while on your back – demonstrating the human brain’s unique ability to do the same movements — in different orientation and …in your imagination. “This is the difference, or advantage, between man over beasts because we are able to distinguish and to know what we are doing. Also, we are able to do the opposite and also something else.” You are then guided to use these actions for self-preservation – self-protection as he has you use your center to flex and roll to the side with knees to elbows in a fetal position so an attacker won’t get you. In this position you could kick and punch with arm and leg that is free. [submitted by Bonnie@feldenkraisinsarasota.com]
Lesson Outline
- Prone. pull w arms — your elbows to your knees in a very parallel way.
- Repeat on your back precisely elbows to knees
- Crawl; right elbow to right knee on belly and left to left
- Repeat the same actions while on your back
- Use your center to flex and roll to the side with knees to elbows
Focus of the teaching
- The main theme for me was the need to clarify your center so that it can easily and quickly move your limbs for locomotion and self-protection.
- He talks about precision: “If now you try to look at a baby at home, you will see that when he crawls – when he lies on the back – that he does these movements without thinking a moment. The problem is that older people need their imagination and the precision of their movement to be better than a baby’s.
- Then he talks about Self-Protection: “Nature prepares the baby for a life of defense and attack, for everything that is necessary so it would be able to survive without the police defending him, or the army defending him, because it is not always possible to depend on those brave people who are defending him. Each person needs to know how to defend himself.
