Synopsis
- AY 306 uses an imaginary heavy ball to clarify skeletal pathways and movement organization. Through rolling this imagined weight along arms and legs while lying supine and prone, the lesson develops awareness of bone alignment and muscular efficiency in movement.
Lesson Outline
- Sections 1-2: Lying supine with arms spread to sides and palms up, imagine a heavy iron ball in your right palm. Roll it slowly to elbow, return to palm, then continue to shoulder dimple beneath clavicle. Repeat on left side, then roll ball between shoulder dimples across chest, exploring variations with head position.
- Sections 4-5: Prone with arms extended sideways and backs of hands up, roll imaginary ball from right hand to neck via shoulder blade. Explore with different head positions, then alternate sides. Notice how spine and ribs respond to movement.
- Sections 7-8: Return to supine with legs together straight, place imaginary ball between ankles. Roll it toward knees and pelvis with minimal movement, paying attention to pressure points and contact areas between legs.

Focus of Moshe’s Teaching: Throughout the lesson, Dr. Feldenkrais emphasizes skeletal organization and efficient movement patterns. He highlights how the imaginary ball helps clarify the “line of every effort of arm that pushes or lifts.” He notes that “There are very few skeletons that really are one hundred percent [symmetrical],” using the ball’s movement to reveal postural patterns and asymmetries.
