- Reel 21, Track 2, Lesson 3
- Duration: 44 minutes
Synopsis
- AY 307 is an imaginative lesson that uses the concept of rolling a heavy iron ball along different pathways of the body while lying supine. Through precise control of this imaginary ball’s movement, you explore spinal flexion and organization while enhancing skeletal awareness and movement coordination.
Lesson Outline
- Sections 1-2: Lying supine with legs together and slightly bent, roll an imaginary heavy iron ball between your legs from knees to stomach and back using fine movements. Pay attention to breathing and unnecessary movements. Variations include rolling the ball using pelvis movement and observing effort points. Then extend the movement to roll the ball between knees and feet, lifting feet to prevent the ball from falling.
- Section 3: Place arms alongside the body and imagine a ball in your throat between chin and chest. Roll the ball along the breastbone to stomach and back by flattening chest and lifting head. Check sternum movement with hands and observe the relationship between head lifting and sternum movement.
- Sections 4-5: With hands interlaced behind head and knees bent with feet standing, lift the pelvis from floor and roll imaginary ball from belly button toward head and back to pubic bone. Then add lifting head and feet from floor while rolling ball from pubic bone to head by lifting pelvis and knees, flattening chest.
- Sections 6-9: Join legs, bend feet (not knees), and roll ball from ankles through knees to stomach, chest, head and return. Progress to diagonal movements, rolling ball from right hand to left foot across body. Finally, with legs joined, roll ball from feet between legs through entire body to throat and return, paying attention to the trajectory and maintaining continuous breathing
Focus of the teaching
- Focus of Moshe’s Teaching: Throughout the lesson, Moshe emphasizes precise control and organization of movement. The ball will only roll if the path is organized correctly – feet must stay bent or the ball will fall. He stresses that movement must be slow and graded to control the ball’s path. Movement transmission through skeletal structure and precision of movement control are key themes, with frequent reminders to maintain breathing and avoid unnecessary effort.
