Synopsis
- Developing hip and back flexibility to achieve lotus position or similar. Supine, one leg standing, the other crossed underneath, sliding the leg left and right; side bending; holding the foot with the hand; holding both feet with knees crossed; lifting the feet and head; finally rolling to sit with crossed legs holding the opposite foot. The lesson develops side-bending, hip rotational flexibility, sitting cross legged.
Lesson Outline
- Supine, arms at sides, right foot on the floor. Bend left knee and place left leg behind right.
- Slide left leg right and back gently, moving thigh, knee, lower leg, and foot.
- Place right arm overhead, hold left ear/temple from above. Slide head, shoulders, and chest to the right; nose stays toward ceiling.
- Slide left foot until it reaches the right palm.
- Move arm and leg together like a pendulum.
- Other side
- Stand right foot, pass left foot behind right heel, hold with right hand.
- Slide right leg around left knee.
- Lift head, lengthen left arm under foot, lift head and shoulders
- Repeat on second side.
- Hold left foot with right hand (thumb under). Lift hand and foot slightly; small, easy movements.
- Repeat other side.
- Cross legs, hold opposite feet.
- Lift head and shoulders
- Lift all together, knees toward face
- Hold crossed feet, roll slightly to left side. Lift right leg with left hand, notice movement.
- Switch sides.
- Stand right foot, slide shoulders right, thread right arm under leg to front of ankle
- Repeat on left. Rest.
- Resume the position. Hold both feet with opposite hands.
- Swing body toward sitting.
- Switch hands and legs, repeat.
- Supine, sense. Standing, sense.

- SF3 – Day 34 – 10 August 1977: Tilting legs on back, knees crossed, fingers interlaced above head continued. Returning to and moving away from easy limits improves those limits.

- there is not much sitting in this cross legged lesson. The side bending and reaching for the feet demands quite a degree of suppleness, I found. (BenP)
